Every year on April 22nd, millions around the world unite for Earth Day, the planet’s largest environmental movement. It’s more than just a date on the calendar, it's a global call to action, urging individuals, businesses and world leaders to confront the climate crisis head-on.

In 2025, Earth Day carries the powerful theme: ‘Our Power, Our Planet’. Spearheaded by EARTHDAY.ORG, this year’s campaign sets an ambitious target, to triple global clean energy generation by 2030. The spotlight is firmly on renewable energy, inviting everyone to play a role in accelerating the transition to a cleaner, greener future.

Why Renewable Energy Is the Focus for Earth Day 2025

Each year, Earth Day adapts to address the planet’s most pressing environmental challenges. In 2025, renewable energy takes centre stage and for good reason:

  • Solar Power is More Affordable Than Ever: The cost of solar panel production dropped by a staggering 93% between 2010 and 2020, making clean energy solutions accessible worldwide.

  • Cleaner Air, Healthier Lives: Reducing fossil fuel reliance cuts harmful air pollution, decreasing the risk of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

  • A Green Economy: The renewable energy sector has the potential to create 14 million jobs globally, driving sustainable economic growth.

  • It’s Already Happening: Nearly 50 countries now generate over half of their electricity from renewable sources, proving a clean energy future is within reach.

The UK’s Push for Solar Power

In alignment with Earth Day’s vision, the UK is ramping up its renewable efforts. In 2024, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband relaunched the 'Solar Taskforce', aiming for a clean power grid by 2030. His vision is clear:

“I want to unleash a UK solar rooftop revolution. We’ll support builders and homeowners to adopt this win-win technology—cutting energy bills, empowering households, and tackling climate change together.”

Earth Day Through the Years: Key Milestones

Earth Day has a rich history of inspiring environmental action across the globe. Here are some of its most defining moments:

  • 1970: The very first Earth Day is held in the United States on April 22, founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson after witnessing a devastating oil spill in 1969. Over 20 million Americans participate, marking the birth of the modern environmental movement.

  • 1990: Earth Day goes global, with 200 million people across 141 countries taking part—pushing environmental issues onto the world stage.

  • 2000: With the rise of the internet, Earth Day mobilises hundreds of millions in 184 countries, demanding urgent action on global warming and clean energy.

  • 2010: Landmark initiatives like A Billion Acts of Green and The Canopy Project (focused on reforestation) are launched, driving grassroots activism.

  • 2015: The United Nations selects Earth Day as the symbolic date to sign the historic Paris Agreement, committing nations to limit global warming and boost renewable energy.

  • 2020: Earth Day celebrates its 50th anniversary, with over one billion people worldwide participating in digital climate action amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Earth Day and the Birth of the Energy Saving Trust

Earth Day’s influence extends far beyond a single day of action. In 1992, global momentum from Earth Day helped drive the United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro where environmental sustainability took centre stage.

As part of the UK’s response, the Energy Saving Trust was established to help households and businesses reduce carbon emissions and promote energy efficiency.

Following the summit, in 1994, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was ratified, setting the foundation for international climate negotiations. This led to the annual Conference of the Parties (COP) meetings, where nations gather to address climate change.

One of the most significant COPs was COP21 in Paris (2015), where the landmark Paris Agreement was signed. Countries pledged to:

  • Cut CO₂ emissions significantly.

  • Increase investment in renewable energy.

  • Limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

Looking Ahead: Your Role in Earth Day 2025

From its grassroots beginnings in 1970 to shaping international climate policy, Earth Day has proven the power of collective action. In 2025, the mission is clear: harness our power to protect our planet by embracing renewable energy.

Whether it’s installing solar panels, supporting green policies, or simply spreading awareness, every action counts.
